DC Water Lead Service Line Replacement

PROJECT details

Client: District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority

Location: District of Columbia - By Block

Capabilities: Replacement

Services: Lead Service Line Replacement (LSLR)

  • DC Water prioritizes providing safe drinking water and has taken extensive measures to reduce lead contamination. While the water is lead-free upon leaving the treatment facility and traveling through the distribution system, it can encounter lead from service lines, pipes, and plumbing around homes. The District of Columbia has over 42,000 service lines made of lead or galvanized iron, which DC Water aims to replace with copper. This contract contributed over 600 lead service replacements to the Lead Free Goal.

Launched in 2019, the Lead Free DC Initiative accelerates lead service line replacement and combines all lead reduction efforts under one banner. On June 30, 2023, DC Water released a new Lead Service Line Replacement Plan. This ambitious effort aims to ensure the quality and safety of drinking water in the District. The initiative encourages community involvement and aims to keep the water clean by replacing all lead service lines in the District of Columbia.
