PROJECT details

Client: DC Water

Location: Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington DC

Capabilities: Rehabilitation, Emergency Services, Value Engineering / Design Build

Services: Bypass Pumping, Geopolymer

  • The Challenge: In early summer 2023, DC Water discovered that two major interceptor lines beneath Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB) were at imminent risk of collapse due to severe corrosion and erosion from converging sanitary lines. These lines handle up to 900 million gallons per day during peak wet weather, making immediate action imperative.

Spiniello’s Quick Response: DC Water called on Spiniello’s DC Team, led by Faustino Menjivar and Wayne Cunningham, to tackle the urgent situation. The team swiftly began:

Hydraulic Excavation: Removing earth from above the damaged pipes for inspection and repairs.

External Reinforcement: Stabilizing the compromised pipes to prevent collapse.

Diversion Channel Construction: Creating a diversion channel using sheet piles to reroute wastewater flows for upcoming repairs.

Innovative Solutions for Long-Term Stability: With the diversion channel in place, the team prepared for the installation of the PALTEM lining system in partnership with Structural Technologies. This advanced system will provide a durable solution for the interceptor lines’ long-term stability.
